Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. & Affiliates
Headquarters: St. Augustine, Florida
In 1979, Commander-in-Chief Harold Grossman and friends from the 451st Bomber Group began meeting with each other to keep in touch. They soon formed the first organized veterans' group in the state of Florida, the Bomber Group 451st, Inc.
Once Grossman and his friends were recognized as an official veterans' organization, their mission became clear. Their intentions were to assist veterans and senior citizens in the area through donations and transportation services to the VA hospital. Bomber Group 451st, Inc. carried out their services for the next 10 years.
In 1989, Commander Grossman and some of the other members had watched several of their members pass on. They knew if the 451st was to continue they would have to find new veterans. So, they decided to change the name to Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. Hoping the younger guys could build on the success of Bomber Group 451st., by expanding the services started by them. In 1991 the group was trying to come up with ways to raise funds for the VA Health Care and Senior Veterans so they added (And Affiliates to their name).
In August of 2004, Commander Grossman passed away. His title of International Commander was retired in his honor. Jerry Bass currently serves as National Commander, While Other National Officers are Senior Vice: Mike Hessong, National Secretary: Mike Davis and Officer of the Day: William Forehand.
Today, in 36 locations across Florida, Allied Veterans of the World, Affiliates continues to raise funds through their Internet Centers for Veterans Health Care and other First Respondent Organizations. During the last four years the group has donated over Five Million Dollars to Veterans Health Care and other First Respondents.
The Scheidel Foundation
Herb Scheidel was the son of German immigrants. He grew up in Ohio with the understanding that hard work and an education were important for success. He started with a newspaper route and was a door-to-door salesman. Due to the expense, he had to drop out of Purdue University after one year. At the age of 30 he moved to Japan as Vice President of Marketing for an English language teaching company. He spent 14 years in Japan where he met is lovely wife Miyuki. Their daughters Ema and Miki were born in Tokyo.
Miyuki had also grown up knowing the importance of hard work. Her father worked in the coal mines. Her mother had to pump the water outside and bring in the firewood in order to cook. But both Herb and Miyuki also knew the importance of an education.
Herb Scheidel purchased the company he worked for after the founder died in 1982. He expanded Learning Technologies, Ltd. to Taiwan, Hong Kong and other parts of Asia. Over time the company has done very well. Both he and Miyuki became involved in Habitat for Humanity in Jacksonville Beach and St. Augustine/St. Johns County, sponsoring a number of homes and donating to help staff their positions.
The Scheidel Foundation was established in order to provide scholarship opportunities to the children and parents who lived in the Habitat for Humanity homes, as well as for children being helped by other organizations. Herb Scheidel died of cancer in 2008 but his legacy lives on through the many individuals he, Miyuki and their children have helped throughout their lives. We at the Chase-Rescorla Scholarship Foundation are very fortunate to be able to keep his memory alive through the scholarships that we are able to provide.
